Slack-packing in a global biodiversity hotspot
The Penguin Trail is a magical hiking trail based in Betty’s Bay within the Kogelberg Biosphere,
just 100 kilometres / 1.5 hours from Cape Town. This 3 day 28 kilometre trail is suitable for anyone with a medium level of fitness.
There are 12 trails in the year, 2 in each of our autumn months (March, April, May), and 2 in each of our spring months (September, October, November).
The dates are set according to the tide timetable, to avoid beach walks on soft sand at high tide.We can accommodate a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 people on each trail.
The trail is suitable for children aged 12 years and older. The trail package is fully catered, and includes 3 nights’ accommodation and 2.5 days of hiking with a guide.
Accommodation is in the very comfortable Fijnbos Manor Guesthouse in Betty’s Bay.
It is slack packing, so all you need to carry is a light day pack.
Pick up and drop off in Cape Town can be arranged.
The trail is run by the Hangklip Community Care Centre (www.hccc.co.za), a local charity organization providing food parcels, subsidised cooked meals, and other services to the communities living in the Hangklip area. All the proceeds from the trail go towards providing funding for these services.
Trail Description
Day 1 - Arrival, check in, trail briefing
Day 2 - Hangklip Peninsula to Silversands Beach
Distance : 13 km.
Rating : Easy, moderately difficult in parts.
Our trail starts at Moonlight Beach below Hangklip Mountain. After passing the Hangklip Lighthouse, the trail takes us around the Hangklip Peninsula before joining the beach at the Hangklip Slipway. We enjoy evidence of our strandloper predecessors, with a midden below the lighthouse and fish traps in Mast Bay. After walking around Mast Bay, we come to Sea Farm peninsula. Here there is some scrambling over the rocks, and there is a great beach to swim and cool off during the warmer months. We enjoy a lunch break on the rocks at Sea Farm peninsula, before continuing our walk to rejoin the beach at Silversands. Look out for argonaut shells on Silversands Beach in the autumn months. We end the trail at the Silversands Beach car park.

Day 3 - Kogelberg Oudebosch Office to Harold Porter Gardens
Distance : 10 km.
Rating : Moderately difficult, difficult in parts.
Our trail starts at the Kogelberg Oudebosch Office in the heart of the Kogelberg Biosphere. We walk up the Oudebosch River Valley through a yellowwood forest, before coming out on the saddle at the top of the valley. There is some scrambling up the rocks to reach the saddle. The stunning views from the saddle towards Cape Hangklip offer the opportunity for a welcome rest after our ascent. We stop for a lunch break at the rocks above the Leopard’s Kloof waterfall, where we can enjoy the pristine Kogelberg fynbos. We cross the Leopard’s Kloof River and traverse the mountainside to begin our descent on the zig zag path into the Harold Porter Gardens. There is some exposure to heights at the beginning of the zig zag path, but there are chains to help us on our way. We follow the path down into the gardens. There is time to relax and enjoy the gardens after our hike.

Day 4 – Jock’s Bay to Stony Point Penguin Colony
Distance : 5 km.
Rating : Easy.
Our trail starts at Jock’s Bay at the eastern end of the Betty’s Bay marine reserve. We follow the coastal path to the start of the beach at Dawid’s Kraal. We may be able to boulder hop across the Dawid River outlet, or we may need to wade across. At Dawid’s Kraal, our route takes us on to Main Beach, where we can stop for a refreshing swim in the warmer months. There is generally an abundance of shore birds to enjoy on the coastal path and on the beach. At Die Been, we join the coastal path that takes us round the Stony Point Bay. We end the trail at the Stony Point Penguin Colony, where we have time to enjoy the penguins before lunch at On the Edge Restaurant.

Trail Dates
There are 12 trails every year, 2 in each of March, April and May (our autumn months), and 2 in each of September, October and November (our spring months). We do not run trails during our hot summer months and during our wet winter months.
Part of our coastal hikes on days 2 and 4 are on the beach. The dates are set according to the tide timetable, to coincide with low tide and to obviate the need for walking on soft sand at high tide.
March and November are likely to be hot, and swim stops offer enjoyable breaks on the hike. April and May are mild, and are ideal for hiking. September marks the start of spring, and the fynbos flowers provide a spectacular display. But the weather in September may still be unsettled, with some cold and wet days, and we should be prepared for and expect some rain. October is more settled.Any and all of these months are good for hiking in our beautiful Kogelberg!
